Should You Frame Canvas Art?

One of the most popular forms of art that our professional framing business deals with is canvas art. Canvas art is popular for many reasons. The texture of the canvas adds depth and visual interest to the artwork, creating a tactile surface. The flexibility of canvas allows for larger-scale works to create a bold statement in a room. The porous nature of canvas absorbs and reflects light differently than other surfaces, adding richness to the artwork. Canvas is durable and long-lasting. It can also provide a more timeless feel when framed in a traditional frame or a more contemporary feel when framed in a floater frame or gallery-wrapped. The feeling you are trying to convey can help you decide whether or not to frame your canvas art.

Custom Picture Framing: To Mat or Not to Mat

When it comes to creating a custom frame for an item, the question sometimes arises, “to mat or not to mat?” While the decision is ultimately up to you and your personal preference, using a mat can have a wide range of benefits. Do you prefer that your piece fully bleeds to the frame’s inner edge, or would you like a mat to create a border or window to help emphasize your piece? To help you make the decision, our team of custom art and photo framing experts is sharing all of our insights on everything you need to know about using matting in custom framing, the benefits of custom frame matting, and more!

Benefits of Custom Frame Matting

Our team of Boca Raton framers recommends using matting in several custom framing situations. One of the many benefits of using matting in custom framing is the ability for the mat to create a separation between a photograph or other item and the glass of the frame. Picture frames with matting help prevent photos, works on paper, sports jerseys, or other items from sticking to the glass of the frame. Mats can also provide an aesthetically pleasing look by creating a border between the item and the frame moulding.

Mats can be used to highlight a specific color in your artwork and can also be layered to incorporate desired colors into the framing project. For example, picture frame mats can be layered to incorporate specific school colors, team colors, or corporate logo colors. Laser-cut custom mats can also be created with different cut-out shapes to border individual items when framing multiple items in the same frame or to add years, Greek letters, or other numbers or letters into the project. If you want your piece to pop, consider using colored matting to back or border the item or using a second colored mat or two-tone beveled mat to provide an accent.

Choosing Not to Mat & Using Picture Frame Spacers

If you choose not to use a mat when custom framing artwork or photos under glass, we recommend using spacers. Picture frame spacers are tiny pieces of plastic used around the edge of the glass or Plexi that sit between the glazing and the item being framed. Picture frame spacers come in three sizes to provide different levels of air cushion between the artwork and the glass of the frame to prevent damage.

Picture Frame Matting Questions to Ask Yourself

Before you make any final decisions on whether you should use picture frame matting or not, ask yourself these questions to get a better idea of your preferences.

What Is the Size of the Piece Being Framed?

When framing smaller items, a mat can help draw attention to the details in the piece or draw attention to the piece itself. Mats can also be used, along with frame mouldings, to tie together different sized or disparate items on a gallery wall by creating a cohesive look through consistent colors and borders.

What Is the Medium Used for the Piece?

Depending on the type of material the item is made from, a picture frame mat may or may not be necessary. For example, photographs are often enhanced by using a mat to frame the image, and the picture frame mat will also help prevent the image from sticking to the frame’s glass. Original artwork, newspaper clippings, documents, and sports jerseys can all be enhanced and protected by the addition of an acid-free mat.

Where Do You Plan On Hanging Your Framed Piece?

Matting for custom framing comes in a wide variety of colors and textures and can be cut to different sizes and shapes. Mats in different colors and textures make it easier for your final framed piece to fit in aesthetically with the wall, room, or other framed items where you plan to hang your piece. Consider where you plan on hanging your framed item to determine if adding matting will help it complement the space.

Framing Pictures to Protect Art From Yellowing

Many of us frame and display photos, art, documents or keepsakes we cherish. Unfortunately, over time, these mementos and pictures can yellow and fade with age. That is why our company, which offers professional framing near Fort Lauderdale, recommends custom framing solutions to protect photos, documents and art from yellowing. Using the right framing methods for your art can prevent the picture from turning yellow and counteract fading.

With over 40 years in the commercial framing industry, our team of professional framers knows a thing or two about protecting art from yellowing and is here to share our insights so you can maximize the life of your art, photos and documents.

What Causes Pictures to Turn Yellow

One of the main reasons paper and pictures turn yellow over time is because they are exposed to naturally occurring acidic materials. For example, wood-based framing materials such as mats that contain lignin. Lignin creates acid as it ages, which can yellow pictures over time. Paper-based materials exposed to materials containing lignin can become discolored or yellow with age.

Another cause of pictures deteriorating over time is exposure to UV light, which can cause them to fade.

How to Protect Art From Yellowing

If you want to protect your art, photographs and documents, such as diplomas, from yellowing, be sure to use acid-free framing materials that do not contain lignin. Our best advice for preventing yellowing art is to mount it on a pH–neutral or acid-free mat board.

Finding the Perfect Frame Glass to Protect Art and Pictures From Fading

When it comes to preventing art and pictures from fading, you must be mindful of protecting them from UV exposure and rays. Avoid hanging your art or photos in direct sunlight; but, if you must, our South Florida framers highly recommend using frame glass with UV protection to prevent fading. UV protection glass works wonders when it comes to protecting artwork, blocking about 90 to 98 percent of UV rays. Want an anti-reflective glaze? Opt for glazing that combines UV protection with anti-reflective properties.
