The Best Photos for Canvas Printing

gallery-wrapped photos on canvas

When shopping around for quality, photo framing services in South Florida, you will discover various mounting and framing options to complement your home or office decor. Our professional framers at Rosenbaum Framing discuss options for printing photos on stretched canvas.

What Is Stretched Canvas?

If you’re new to the world of framing, you may not have heard of stretched canvas. It’s a process that involves stretching a canvas around a framework made of wooden “stretcher bars.” A pneumatic stapler is then used to staple the canvas to the back of the bars if the stretched canvas will not be framed or to their sides if it will. For large canvas prints, cross bars are also added to keep the stretched canvas from bowing. Stretcher bars of varying thicknesses can be used to create different effects. For example, a thicker stretcher bar can be used to create a gallery wrap, where the image continues around the edges of the wooden framework and the resulting stretched canvas is hung directly on the wall without the addition of an outer frame. Stretched canvases can also be framed inside traditional or “floater” frames (in which the stretched canvas appears to be suspended within an outer frame.)

Now that you know your framing options for canvas prints, here are some tips for the best types of photos to print on canvas. They should be high-resolution digital photos such as wedding photos, baby pictures, or family portraits taken by a professional photographer; travel or other photos taken with a good quality camera; or even photos taken with your smartphone. When using photos from your phone, however, be sure to use the original image, not a version that was sized down for Facebook or Instagram, and especially not a screenshot, as a lower-resolution image will get pixelated once it is sized up for printing. The images should not have important details near their edges as these details may get lost once the canvas print gets wrapped around the stretcher bars, especially if the stretched canvas will be framed.
