The History Of Small Business Saturday

This year, Saturday, November 30^th is Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year, consumers are encouraged to “Shop Small” at their local stores and businesses. A year after its creation, Small Business Saturday was recognized by the United States Senate and supported by President Obama. Since its creation, Small Business Saturday has been growing in popularity each year. According to a survey by the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express, 104 million shoppers spent over $17.8 billion on Small Business Saturday last year alone.¹ The hope is that these numbers will continue to grow each year and more people will turn to small businesses for their holiday shopping.
