How to Hang Artwork

Once you have artwork, photos or other objects professionally framed, you’ll definitely want to show off the results. Our professional framing experts at Rosenbaum Framing, and our sister division, RFA Decor, share some useful tips on how to hang your art or other custom framing techniques.

What Is the Proper Way to Hang Art?

The #1 professional tip for hanging art is to hang the piece approximately 62 inches above the floor, which is eye level for the average person. Hanging art at eye level allows viewers to admire it comfortably. Learn more about it.

Hanging More Than Work

If you have two or more photos or works of art, it’s best to ensure the centers are all aligned at the same height, unless you are creating a gallery wall. You should also keep the works evenly spaced for greater harmony.

Creating a Gallery Wall

There are two main types of gallery walls: grids, which group works with consistent, even, linear spacing and can be used for hanging several smaller framed works in place of one larger one, and salon-style, a more eclectic arrangement that can be used to fill irregular spaces or to hang an odd number of works. To minimize damage to your wall, measure the space where you want to hang your pieces and re-create those dimensions on the floor with tape. Lay your framed works within the marked space on the floor until you are pleased with the arrangement. Next, use the measurements from your arrangement on the floor to calculate the placement of each picture hook or nail. You can also create and tape paper templates cut to the size of each work to your wall to help you position your picture hangers.

Get Creative

Not all custom framing has to hang on the wall. Get creative! Lean framed works against a wall or place them on a shelf to keep them safe. If you go one of these routes, be very careful not to scratch the bottom edges of the frames in case you change your mind and want to hang them later. If you plan on changing your art or photos often, consider installing a picture rail so that you can hang your artwork easily without damaging your walls.
